Core Definition

Success does not mean that you cannot fail. Success means that you cannot accept failure.

Why Definitions Matter

Everyone has some definition for success. This definition directly affects:

  • What we think
  • How we view success and failure
  • How we pursue our goals

Key insight: To improve your chances of succeeding, you may need to change your outlook on success by adopting a better definition.

The Two Problems This Definition Solves

Problem 1: Temporary Setbacks Become Discouragement

Whenever we attempt to accomplish anything, initial failures and obstacles are likely. If you become disheartened and give up, you won’t achieve what you set out to do.

Problem 2: Failed Confidence = Half-Hearted Attempts

When we fail, our confidence is affected. Any future attempts at our goals may become half-hearted attempts—reducing our actual chance of success.

Benefits of Refusing to Accept Failure

When you refuse to accept failure:

  1. You try harder the next time you fail
  2. You gather more information to improve your approach
  3. You work on your shortcomings rather than dwelling on defeat
  4. You learn from your mistakes for future attempts
  5. You shift focus from something you can’t control (outcome) to something you can control (persistence)

Bottom Line

You will keep on persisting with rock-solid determination towards your goals.

This definition reframes failure as temporary rather than permanent, enabling sustained effort despite setbacks.
