Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, otherwise known as Real Madrid or Los Merengues was founded on the 6th of March, 1902. Since then, this Spanish Football Club has gone from strength to strength and is now the most successful team in Spain with a record 31 La Liga titles including 2 in the past 2 seasons. Besides the league title, Real Madrid has also been fruitful in the domestic cup competition (Copa del Rey) by winning it 17 times. Furthermore, the club has enjoyed tremendous success on the European front by winning the UEFA Champions League (or the European Cup as it was known before) an amazing 9 times – the most by any club in Europe.

As one of the giants of world football, Real Madrid was also home to some of the most brilliant footballers that ever graced the football pitch. From past legends such as Santiago Bernabéu Yeste, Alfredo di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Fernando Hierro and Zinédine Zidane to the current crop of stars like Iker Casillias, Raúl González Blanco and Ruud van Nistelrooy, the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu were often treated to some of the best football ever played.

Presently, the current Real Madrid team has won the league title 2 times in a row which is a fantastic achievement considering the competitiveness of the Spanish League. However, as much as the Madridista community
enjoyed those titles, I’m certain that they’re hungry for the team to achieve success in the Champions League again after their last win in the 2001/02 season.

Although Real Madrid has failed to persuade Manchester United in selling Cristiano Ronaldo, plus the departure of several players which include Robinho, Julio Baptista and Antonio Cassano, Real Madrid fans can rest easy as the club has brought in several talented players to fill the gap. Even with the departures, the club has signaled their intent for this season by bringing in several talented players such as Ezequiel Garay, Javi García, Rubén de la Red and most notably, Rafael van der Vaart.

In conclusion, this current Real Madrid team is definitely strong enough to repeat their league success but it would be interesting to see if they can mount a serious challenge on the continent to finally wrestle back the Champions League trophy they last won 7 seasons ago.
